UNSUNG GAMES THAT ARE WORTH PLAYING!!
Playing Ludo or Housie is fun, but have you ever heard of this game known as Ashta chamma?
4.ASHTA CHAMMA
Probably Not! It is a Traditional Indian Board game which is famous in South India. I remember during the summer vacation me, and my cousins used to play it very oftenly. It is similar to ludo, a fascinating game of chance and skill played by two or four players. The special element of the game is that it is Traditionally played with 4 Cowry Shells or Tamarind Seeds. And the Board is drawn by chalk so it can be played easily anywhere and at any given time. Another interesting part of this game is that we can choose our own four pawns for e.g., bangles pieces, shirt buttons, small stones, etc.
The game is controlled by throwing four cowry shells and counting how many are 'as it is', if all four shells land inverted it is called "Astha" which means eight and if all land as it is then it is called a "chamma" which means four. Each player takes a turn to roll the cowrie shells. The Mouth of the shell landing upwards is the value of the particular shell that means if one shell is inverted the value is one and the players move one square, if two shells are inverted the value is two and the players move two squares and same goes for three and four shells. Lastly, if the 4 shells are as it is its Astha the player moves 8 squares.
So, the player needs to get an Astha or a chamma to enter the game. And if the player gets an Astha or chamma he/she gets an extra turn to play. Depending upon the number rolled the player can move up their pawn. If a player's token lands on a square occupied by opponent's token, then the opponent's token is "killed", and the player gets an extra turn to play. The killed token returns to its starting home square and has to go round all over again. In crossed boxes, killing is not possible.
Another rule is - Till you kill the other persons pawn you cannot enter the inner square. Depending upon the number rolled the player can move up their pawn. Each player has a fixed path to move pawns, which is an anti-clockwise direction. The First one to reach the home is the Winner. So, this is how the game works.
I hope you will find it Interesting!!
